Sodium Picosulphate 5 mg Syrup is a stimulant laxative formulated to relieve constipation by enhancing peristalsis, the movement of the intestines. Once ingested, it is converted in the colon into its active form, which stimulates bowel movements within 6–12 hours. The syrup form allows for easy dosing, especially in pediatric or geriatric patients who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.
Sodium Picosulphate syrup is usually well tolerated. Some individuals may experience abdominal discomfort, bloating, or diarrhea. Overuse can lead to dehydration or electrolyte imbalance. Rare allergic reactions such as rash or itching may occur and should be reported immediately.
This syrup is indicated for short-term treatment of constipation and for bowel evacuation before diagnostic procedures like colonoscopy. It is commonly prescribed for adults and children under a doctor's supervision, especially in cases where a gentle but effective laxative is needed.
