This combination tablet unites Ramipril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, and Amlodipine, a long-acting calcium channel blocker (CCB), providing a dual mechanism to effectively control blood pressure. Ramipril lowers blood pressure by blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation and reduced fluid retention, thereby decreasing vascular resistance and cardiac workload. Amlodipine complements this effect by inhibiting calcium influx into vascular smooth muscles, causing further relaxation of blood vessels and improved blood flow. The fixed-dose combination of Ramipril 2.5 mg with Amlodipine 5 mg is often used in patients with mild to moderate hypertension who require combination therapy or who are inadequately controlled on monotherapy. This combination provides additive antihypertensive benefits, reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney complications, and helps maintain stable blood pressure with once-daily dosing.
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, flushing, ankle swelling (peripheral edema), and fatigue. Ramipril may cause a persistent dry cough (a class effect of ACE inhibitors) and rarely hyperkalemia or kidney function changes. Amlodipine can sometimes cause palpitations, gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth), or mild gastrointestinal disturbances. Rarely, angioedema (swelling of the face or throat) may occur with Ramipril and requires immediate medical attention.
Ramipril 2.5 mg + Amlodipine 5 mg Tablet is indicated for the management of essential hypertension in adults, especially in patients who need dual therapy to achieve target blood pressure or those who do not respond sufficiently to a single drug.
This medication should only be taken under medical supervision. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to the risk of fetal toxicity. Use with caution in patients with severe kidney or liver impairment, bilateral renal artery stenosis, or a history of angioedema. Alcohol should be limited as it can potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effect and increase dizziness. Avoid abrupt discontinuation without consulting a healthcare provider. Potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics should be avoided unless prescribed, as ACE inhibitors can increase serum potassium. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes is advised during therapy for safety and efficacy.
Store the tablets in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medicine in its original packaging and out of the reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date mentioned on the blister pack.
