Ramipril 10 mg Tablet is a high-strength angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor widely used in the management of hypertension, heart failure, and to reduce cardiovascular risk in high-risk patients. It works by inhibiting the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, leading to vasodilation, reduced systemic vascular resistance, and decreased blood pressure. Ramipril also reduces aldosterone secretion, minimizing sodium and fluid retention, which helps lower cardiac workload and protects kidney function. The 10 mg strength is typically prescribed as a maintenance dose for patients with severe hypertension or advanced heart failure who have been stabilized on lower doses. Apart from blood pressure control, Ramipril offers significant cardio-protective and reno-protective benefits, making it a key medication in patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, or those recovering from myocardial infarction.
Common side effects include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and a dry, persistent cough typical of ACE inhibitors. Some patients may experience hypotension (especially after the first dose), nausea, or mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Rare but serious adverse reactions include hyperkalemia, angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, or throat), and kidney impairment. Immediate medical attention is required if signs of angioedema or breathing difficulty occur.
Ramipril 10 mg Tablet is indicated for the management of moderate to severe essential hypertension, congestive heart failure, and to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality in patients with a high cardiovascular risk profile. It is also prescribed to slow the progression of kidney disease in both diabetic and non-diabetic nephropathy.
Ramipril 10 mg should only be taken under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to the risk of fetal harm. Caution is advised in patients with severe kidney impairment, bilateral renal artery stenosis, or a history of angioedema. Potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics should be avoided unless specifically prescribed, as ACE inhibitors may increase serum potassium levels. Alcohol intake should be minimized as it can enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect. The medication should not be discontinued abruptly; any dose change must be done gradually under medical advice. Routine monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolytes is recommended for long-term safety and efficacy.
Store Ramipril 10 mg Tablet in a cool, dry environment below 30°C. Keep away from direct sunlight and moisture. Ensure the tablets are kept in their original packaging and out of reach of children. Do not use beyond the expiry date printed on the pack.
