Pifetol 200 Tablet is a pharmaceutical product containing Pirfenidone, a medication primarily used in the treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a chronic lung disease characterized by progressive scarring of the lung tissue. Pirfenidone is an anti-fibrotic agent that helps slow down the progression of lung fibrosis by reducing inflammation and the formation of scar tissue in the lungs, improving lung function and slowing the decline in lung capacity.
Pirfenidone works by modulating the growth factors and cytokines involved in fibrosis and inflammation, leading to a reduction in the activity of the fibrotic process. It is believed to act by inhibiting the production of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β), a key driver of fibrotic activity, and reducing the synthesis of collagen. This helps improve the quality of life for patients suffering from IPF and may prolong survival by reducing the rate of lung function decline.
In addition to its effectiveness in IPF, Pirfenidone is being researched for other fibrotic conditions, but it is currently approved for use in the management of IPF. Common side effects include nausea, fatigue, anorexia, diarrhea, and liver enzyme abnormalities. Rare but serious side effects may include liver toxicity and skin reactions.
