Nifedipine 30 mg SR Tablet is a long-acting calcium channel blocker (CCB) used to manage high blood pressure and angina pectoris. Nifedipine works by blocking the influx of calcium ions into the smooth muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels, causing vasodilation, improved oxygen delivery, and reduced cardiac workload. The sustained-release (SR) formulation provides a controlled, gradual release of the medication over 24 hours, ensuring stable blood pressure control and reduced risk of sudden hypotension compared to immediate-release forms. Nifedipine 30 mg SR is commonly prescribed as part of long-term therapy for essential hypertension, chronic stable angina, and vasospastic (Prinzmetal’s) angina. Its once-daily dosing improves patient compliance while maintaining consistent therapeutic effects.
Common side effects include headache, flushing, dizziness, ankle swelling (peripheral edema), palpitations, and fatigue. Some patients may experience mild gastrointestinal disturbances such as nausea or constipation. Rare adverse effects include hypotension, gingival hyperplasia (gum overgrowth), or reflex tachycardia. Most side effects are mild and may resolve as the body adjusts to the medication or after dose adjustment.
Nifedipine 30 mg SR Tablet is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension and the management of chronic stable angina and vasospastic angina. It may also be used in resistant hypertension in combination with other antihypertensive agents.
Nifedipine 30 mg SR Tablet should be taken strictly as prescribed. Do not chew, split, or crush the sustained-release tablet, as this can lead to rapid drug release and increased side effects. It is contraindicated in patients with severe aortic stenosis, cardiogenic shock, or hypersensitivity to Nifedipine. Caution is advised in patients with heart failure, severe hypotension, or liver impairment. Abrupt discontinuation should be avoided as it can worsen angina or cause a rebound rise in blood pressure. Grapefruit juice should be avoided during therapy as it can increase Nifedipine levels in the blood. The medication is not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly indicated and should be used cautiously during breastfeeding under medical supervision.
Store Nifedipine 30 mg SR Tablet in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect it from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiry date printed on the packaging.
