Midodrine 5 mg Tablet is a vasopressor agent used primarily to treat conditions involving low blood pressure (hypotension). It acts by stimulating the alpha-1 adrenergic receptors found in blood vessels, leading to vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels), which in turn increases blood pressure. Midodrine is a prodrug, meaning it is converted in the body to its active form, desglymidodrine. This active form works directly on the peripheral blood vessels without significantly affecting the heart, making it suitable for patients who require increased blood pressure without increased heart rate. It is particularly effective in managing symptomatic orthostatic hypotension—a condition where blood pressure drops significantly upon standing, leading to dizziness, fainting, and fatigue. The effect of Midodrine begins within 30 minutes and peaks around 1 to 2 hours, making it useful for daily management of low blood pressure, especially in neurological and autonomic disorders.
Common side effects of Midodrine may include piloerection (goosebumps), itching, scalp tingling, urinary urgency or retention, chills, and increased blood pressure while lying down (supine hypertension). Less commonly, patients may experience bradycardia (slow heart rate), skin rashes, or paresthesia. Regular monitoring is necessary to prevent unwanted increases in blood pressure, especially when the patient is in a resting or supine position.
Midodrine 5 mg Tablet is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic orthostatic hypotension due to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It is prescribed in patients who experience dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting upon standing and have not responded adequately to non-pharmacological treatments. It may also be used off-label in certain cases of chronic hypotension or dialysis-induced hypotension under medical supervision.
Midodrine should be taken during daytime hours when the patient is upright and active. It should not be taken within 4–5 hours of bedtime to avoid supine hypertension (high blood pressure while lying down). Regular blood pressure monitoring in both standing and lying positions is important during treatment. Midodrine is contraindicated in patients with severe organic heart disease, acute renal disease, urinary retention, or thyrotoxicosis. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should only be under strict medical advice. Inform your healthcare provider about all current medications to avoid interactions, especially with drugs affecting blood pressure or heart rate.
Store Midodrine 5 mg Tablet at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C, in a dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the tablets in their original packaging and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiry date mentioned on the label or carton.
